As part of our Year of the Spy commemorative festivities, please join us for a screening of Tête-à-Tête on Thursday, December 11th from 5 to 7:30pm. Tête-à-Tête is a film produced and created by Charles Cook, a member of the Carpenters' Company of the County and City of Philadelphia. It depicts a reenactment of the secret meetings held between French spy Julien-Alexandre Achard de Bonvouloir and Benjamin Franklin on the secnod floor of Carpenters' Hall.
Our Year of the Spy festivities are being held in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the secret meetings between Julien-Alexandre Achard de Bonvouloir, a French spy from the Normandy region, Ben Franklin, John Jay (who later became the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court), and translator Francis Daymon, between December 18 and 27, 1775 in the second floor library of Carpenters’ Hall to discuss French support for the revolution. Bonvouloir's report contributed to France’s agreement to support the Americans in the Revolutionary War. France provided much of the gunpowder fired by American troops during the war and the French Navy’s blockade of the Chesapeake allowed our victory at Yorktown.
More information about Bonvouloir and the meetings can be found here.
Light refreshments will be served. Doors open at 5pm. The film will begin at 5:30pm.
We hope to see you there!
